In 1951 govt. merged 3 largest public transport co's ("Egged", central Israel; "Shachar", northern Israel; "Drom Yehuda", southern Israel) into 1 co. & called it 'Eshed' based on 1st initial of each co.; name used briefly & by 1954 reverted back to 'Egged', hence est. pin date.
