1948 Egyptian seizure of mail to Israel: 13-5-1948 reg. a/m cv ex ADDIS ABABA to TLV (sent day before decl. of indep.), franked $1.80 & tied by 3 strikes of local pmk; despite a/m requested, all mail via Ethiopia was sent by surface, esp via Suez Canal: as of early April, Egypt seized, censored & RTS mail sent to Jews in Palestine, as done here - b/s 18 MAY 48 PORT SAID transit (this rare), sent to CAIRO where opened/resealed using K-type-A label & tied by K-Type1 (#55) censor in red (this rare); such mail generally held by Egypt 3-4 months before being returned, hence b/s 6-8-48 ADDIS ABABA arr. Unusual: Ethiopia transmitted mail to Israel when rest of world imposed service suspensions.
