Description

Israeli Navy "Shayetet 13" ("Floatilla 13") naval commando momento token, circa. 1960's; nickel; weight: 15.45g; size: 35mm. Obverse bears emblem of the unit with legend "Momento from your Unit"; on reverse emblem of the Israeli Navy.

The naval commando unit was created in 1950 from Jewish/Eretz Israeli naval commando units of the Second World War, among them the commando force of the "Combined Operations Unit" of the Royal Navy and the naval demolitions section of the Palmach's sea force, the "Palyam" (which attacked Royal Navy vessels in order to enable Holocaust survivors to reach Palestine).

The force takes its number "13" from the fact that one of its members was on board a vessel sunk in pre-State days on the 13th of a certain month, and managed to swim ashore to safety; since then (in those days), every month on the 13th, the force's members would get together to toast him. In VF.
