Israel Air Force (IAF) metal airman's wings with black colored backing (for flight instructors), circa. 1948-mid 1950's; 2-pronged backing and maker-marked "Michsaf"; weight: 10.50 grams; light surface wear but excellent physical condition. Rare

More pictures: front of pin, back of pin with black backing, back of pin with backing removed, closeup of maker's mark, pilots wings at side angle, David Remez, the 1st IAF commander, with wings
Item Code: 0110043 Price: €175

Israel Air Force metal airmans wings with red colored backing (for those who saw combat action), circa. 1948-mid 1950's. Somewhat unusual in design and backing: unlike most samples the design on these wings (particularly the leaves) is more incuse, the face is relatively flat, and the wing tips have a pronounced upturn flair; the planchet is relatively thick and the reverse is scalloped, rather than incuse; the back features a customised soldiered bolt with attached screw rather than the standard 2-pronged flat metal back, and there is no maker-mark. Weighs 11.50g (1 gram more than the usual issue). Bears some surface wear and light scratches; looks well worn and 'invested' by its apparently proud wearer. Rare.

Israel Defense Forces, Air Force badge - Headpiece emblem of the [Israel] Air Force ("Kheil Ha'Avir"), with two loops side by side on the reverse, for mounting. The emblem would have been worn on a beret or hat, circa 1970's. Not maker-marked. In excellent condition though the very tip of the right wing is curled back.
Item Code: 0020020.2 Price: SOLD

Israel Air Force ("Kheil Ha'Avir") hat badge, 1960's: with screwback reverse (possibly replaced from the original) though screw itself is missing. Received from consignor whose father was in the IAF in the 1960's, the emblem can also be dated to the period because the legend in Hebrew uses one letter "vav" in the word "Avir" (air) instead of two, as used in versions issued from the late 1970's onwards. Darkened metal with some surface wear but otherwise in excellent condition; not maker marked; weight: 7.70g

Detailed metal pin of the 117th First Jet Squadron ("Ha'Silon Ha'Rishon" in Hebrew) of the Israel Air Force (IAF), circa. 1950's-60's. The Squadron was established in June 1953 and became the first in the IAF to fly jet aircraft - the British Meteor T.7 and F8. The Squadron partook in all the major combat engagements from that time onwards, including the 1981 raid on the Iraqi nuclear facility in Osirak. Based in Ramat David airbase, it now flies F16-C's. Solidly manufactured with a safety pin on the reverse.

IAF 137th Anti-Aircraft Missile unit moment, circa. 1973: 22.65g, 35.5mm uniface tallion with emblem of the unit featuring a HAWK anti-aircraft missile, and legend in Hebrew "Momento from 'Yatnam' 137".

The Israel Air Force first received the HAWK missile in 1965 and absorbed them into special units then known as "surface-to-air missile units" ("Yatka" by its Hebrew abbreviation); in 1970, when the anti-aircraft corps of the Air Force was formed these units were transformed into the "anti-aircraft missile units", and in the Yom Kippur War (1973) these forces served on the Sinai front against Egypt.

Israel Air Force appreciation medal, circa. 1973; struck in silvered bronze(?); no maker mark; weight: 79.3g; size: 59mm. Obverse bears stylized image of 11 airplanes in motion with legend in Hebrew "In Appreciation from the Air Force"; on reverse the emblem of the air force (with old style of writing the name "Kheyl Avir" rather than "Kheyl HaAvir") with quotation from the Book of "Tehilim", "And He Will Exhalt You to Inherit the Land" (strangely spelled with two letters "yud" instead of one in "ViYeromemkha").

Likely issued in appreciation of service by a foreign citizen around the time of the Yom Kippur War (1973), and a good instance would be the air train of supplies sent to the IDF during the war to replenish its weapons stocks. In AU-UNC, with lacquered surface and a few specs of light green oxidation.

IAF "1st Fighter Squadron" 25 year commemorative medal, 1973: gold colored bronze medal depicting the emblem of the Israel Air Force's [101st] first fighter squadron with dates 1948 and 1973 on obverse, and stylized image of a Mystere(?) fighter plane on reverse with Hebrew legend "First Fighter Squadron". A pre 1973 War issue.

The squadron was established by Lou Lennart and Modi Alon (Israel's first air ace), and the unit's design was created by an overseas volunteer (called "Machal") at that time, Stan Andrews. During the 1948 War of Independence the squadron's members wore red baseball hats and the force became known as the "Red Squadron". Over the years the 101st Squadron used the Czech-made Messerschmidt, the Avia S-199, the Spitfire, the P-51 Mustang, the CB, Mystere, Mirage 3C, Nesher, Kfir, and now F-16c.

Around the time this medal was produced the Squadron flew the Mirage 3C, and during the 1973 War its commander Avi Lanir was captured by the Syrians after evacuating his plane, and tortured to death while in captivity. In AU, with a few areas oxidation/loss of gold patina, and a few specs of white paint; not maker-marked; weight: 93.35; size: 60mm.

The 100th was the first organized squadron formed in the Air Force (8 July 1949) and served as transport squadron until today. In AU-UNC.

Israel Air Force Base 27 (Lod) uniface recognition medal (ND); struck in bronze; no maker-mark; weight, 93.6g; size, 59.5mm: obverse depcits symbol of the IAF bases with legend above in Hebrew "In recognition for your services at Air Force Base 27". Probably a 1973 Yom Kippur War medal of recognition for the services of the recipient (this medal, together with several others listed here, comes from a collection of Yom Kippur War recognition medals).

Base 27 was the base at Lod airfield (known in Hebrew as "Basis Kheyl haAvir Lod", whose civilian airport there is the Ben Gurion International airport), and serviced transport aircraft. Among the important wartime transportion operations that would have occured in Lod, the American airlift of arms to the IDF (starting 14 October) would have been one of the most critical. Base 27 closed in 2008 and was transferred to the Nabatim base (Base 28) in the Negev. In UNC, with lacquered surface.

Israeli Navy "Shayetet 13" ("Floatilla 13") naval commando momento token, circa. 1960's; nickel; weight: 15.45g; size: 35mm. Obverse bears emblem of the unit with legend "Momento from your Unit"; on reverse emblem of the Israeli Navy.

The naval commando unit was created in 1950 from Jewish/Eretz Israeli naval commando units of the Second World War, among them the commando force of the "Combined Operations Unit" of the Royal Navy and the naval demolitions section of the Palmach's sea force, the "Palyam" (which attacked Royal Navy vessels in order to enable Holocaust survivors to reach Palestine).

The force takes its number "13" from the fact that one of its members was on board a vessel sunk in pre-State days on the 13th of a certain month, and managed to swim ashore to safety; since then (in those days), every month on the 13th, the force's members would get together to toast him. In VF.

ISRAELI AIR FORCE & NAVY ACCOUTREMENTS, HEADWEAR and UNIFORMS

Israeli Air Force hat, late 1940's - very early 1950's. Lovely gray-blue and black cap, with black leather sweat-band, black crown band, thick visor and plain, maker un-marked buttons (i.e. suggesting that hat is from period above, before the IDF emblem appeared on buttons). The hat bears the metal screw-on emblem of the Israel Air Force (some wear to surface), and has a tan-brown leather inside-liner and taupe colored fabric lining. The inside crown is covered with an extra layer of light translucent plastic which protects the stamp of the maker: "Makers of All Kinds of Hats - P. Birnzweig - Tel Aviv, Montefiore St. 26". The hat is in very good condition, though the crown has a several small tear marks and underneath, the crown liner is exposed in a few areas where the fabric has worn away. A lovely historical item from the beginning years of what is generally considered the world's best air force.

ISRAELI AIR FORCE & NAVY DOCUMENTS and EPHEMERA:

Captured books from the Egyptian war vessel "Ibrahim Al Awal" by First Sergeant Shlomo Zohar, 1956 (see item 0020027.2).
Early in the morning on the third day of the Sinai Campaign ("Operation Kadesh"), 31 October 1956, the Egyptian destroyer "Ibrahim al Awal" entered Haifa Bay from Port Said and fired several rounds at the city. The shelling lasted only a few minutes as an anchored French warship returned fire, forcing the Ibrahim al Awal to evacuate the area. She sailed northwest from Haifa and slipped between neutral American ships in that area. At dawn, she was spotted by the Israeli Air Force who strafed the ship and disabled her electrical, steering and munitions delivery systems. Her crew abandoned ship and both they and the ship were captured by the Israeli naval vessels, "Eilat" and "Yafo".

According to a fellow-member of Zohar's boarding party, they found the Ibrahim al Awal completely abandonned and captured the Egyptian sailors from the sea waters. They brought them on board their vessel and fed the Egyptian sailors as they sat cross-legged on the deck (before their captain permitted them to sit and eat). Once ashore, the captured Egyptian crew was turned over to the Israeli military police. The Egyptian vessel was towed back to Haifa, where it was repaired, and redesignated the I.N.S. "Haifa".

The books are intact, though worn and the covers frail. They are stamped by the library on board the Egyptian vessel, and First Sergeant Zohar himself has written in Hebrew that they come from the Ibrahim al Awal. This same comrade of Zohar's recounts that some twenty years later, Zohar commit suicide.
