"Moses" Joachimsthal of the 'Praguemedaille' series, as a tallion, by Hieronymus Magdeburger and school (ND), circa. 1535 but may be later period cast; white metal cast; size: 36mm, weight: 12.45.

Obverse: depicts left facing bust of Moses with long, pointed beard and upraised horns, with legend "DER•HER•IST•MEIN•STERCK•VN•LOBSANG•VN•IST•MEI•HEIL*" around edge and "MO ISE" split on either side of bust, with "•EX•15•" below and the Hebrew word "Moses" ("Moshe") on collar of bust.

Reverse: a square device with 4 lines of Hebrew legend (poorly engraved by a non-Hebrew speaker, probably meaning "Shall Have no Other G-D Before Me") and one more line below these "•EXODVS•Zo•", with 4 more lines of legend around each of the square's sides: "DV•SOLT KE" / "IN•ANDER•" / "GOTTER•N" / "EBEN•MIR H" (omitted "•" references in above legends is deliberate).

Very rare design: most pieces seen today are later off-center casts without the the "•EX•15•" reference or unifaces of this type. Raised border along edge as per Katz 146 (picture plate XVIII-3); tallion loop welded to top.

In EF-AU: lack of detail in places probably due more to casting than actual wear. For a similar piece (Katz 145), see 0130181.

"Moses" Joachimsthal of the 'Praguemedaille' series, by Hieronymus Magdeburger and school (ND), circa. 1535; in pewter; size: 37mm, weight: 18.75.

Obverse: depicts left facing bust of Moses with short beard and curled ram's horns, with legend "DER•HER•IST•MEIN STERCK•VN•LOBSANG•VN IST MEI•HEIL*" around edge and "MO ISE" split on either side of bust, with "•EX•15•" below and the Hebrew word "Moses" ("Moshe") on collar of bust.

Reverse: a square device with 4 lines of Hebrew legend (poorly engraved by a non-Hebrew speaker, probably meaning "Shall Have no Other G-D Before Me") and one more line below these "•EXODVS•Z9•", with 4 more lines of legend around each of the square's sides: "DV•SOLT KE" / "IN•ANDER•" / "GOTTER•N" / "EBEN•MIR H" (omitted "•" references in above legends is deliberate).

Very rare type. Milled edge: the original strike had a leafed edge pattern - that said, a silver version of this exact piece with milled edges sold at Künker's auction 119 (2007) for €5000 (around €7500 at the exchange rate of that time) on a €2500 estimate. In EF+, with good beard details and traces of luster; Katz 145 (picture plate XVIII-4) and JM-93. For a similar piece (Katz 146), see 0130163.

"David and Batsheva" ('Bathsheba' or 'Betsabe') cuckold Joachimstahler (ND), circa. 1540-1550; struck in brass; by Concz Welcz.

Obverse: depicts bust of King David in robes (clasp on right shoulder), with crown and duck on top, surmounted by double-lined legend separated by border line: "DAVID.EIN.GESALBTER.GOTTES.VND.KONIG.IN.ISRA. / I.SAMVEL. XVI.CAPIT." ("David G-d's Annointed King in Israel").

Reverse: depicts image of Batsheva bathing in a courtyard pool, with buildings in background, and David leaning over the first level balcony to see her (an image possibly inspired by Hans Sebald Beham - Katz p.201); legend around edge reads, "DAVID.BRICHT.DIE.EH.MIT.BERSABEA.3.REG.II.".

Welcz's work draws upon the Biblical story of David falling in love with/becoming lustful for the married Batsheva, getting her pregnant and eventually having her husband killed in battle in order to hide the sinful pregnancy - acts for which David and his family paid for dearly afterward. The "duck" on David's head is probably a symbol for his "cuckolding" behavior - a metaphore use elsewhere by Christian Wermuth on his "Feather jew" medals.

In G-F, with a chip of the bottom missing; Katz #254 p. 135 and plate XXX-6; very similar to Kirschner-9; may be Fieweger-74 (but little smaller).

"David and Batsheva" / "Lot and his Daughters" Joachimsthaler (ND), circa. 1545 - 1570; cast in white metal; by Nickel Milicz and his workshop; size: 46.25mm, weight: 20.85g.

Obverse: depicts scene of King David peering from a balcony at Batsheva bathing in courtyard pool, and legend around edge: "DAVID.SANDTE.POTEN.HIN.UND.LIES.DIE.BERSABEA.HOLEN.REGVM.XI" - an image possibly inspired by Hans Sebald Beham, Katz p.201. Reverse: depicts scene of Lot and his two daughters, with the town of Sdom (Sodom) burning in the background, and legend "VND.LOT.ZOCH.AVS.ZOAR.VND.BLIB.AVF.DEN.BERG.MIT.SEINEN.GENE.XIX.".

In AU-UNC: good detail considering that medal is a cast piece, but lack of finer detail also due to casting method rather than actual wear; tallion at top has been clipped off; Katz #417 p. 200 and plate LIV-2.

Reverse: depicts Haman hanging from gallows in the courtyard of his house; legends reads "Das Havs [Haus] Haman".

Forrer lists Krauwinkel as one of the "best known Nuremburg Counter-manufacturers of the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth Centuries". In Fine condition, Fieweger-75, Mitch-1626 ff, Neu-32278, Stalzer-295.

Papal medal: Pope Paul IV / Jesus driving out merchants medal, 1559; struck in bronze; by the medalist Federigo Parmensis (also known as Gianfederico Bonzagni, Federigo Parmigiano and Gian Federigo Bonzagna), but not artist marked; size: 29.5mm, weight: 12.6g.

Reverse: depicts bust of Paul IV (Giovanni Pietro Carafa di Capriglia Irpina; 1555-1559) facing right, wearing plain robe; legend in Latin reads ".PAVLVS.IIII. .PONT.OPT.M.". Reeded edge.

In UNC with some original luster; Spink #569; Forrer IV pg. 392-93.

Among the deeds to his credit, in 1555 Paul IV issued the canon, "Cum nimis absurdum", which, under the pretext of Jewish "ungratefulness" to Christianity, established the Roman Ghetto for the Jews, who were subsequently forced to live there in seclusion, and wear distinctive signs - yellow hats for men and veils or shawls for women. Using Christ's banishment of the merchants from the Temple as a metaphor, this Papal medal is believed to depict Paul IV's public disgracement and banishment of his nephews from Rome for their scandalous behavior upon receiving positions of power there.

Russia, Birobidzhan "Jewish Autonomous Oblast" uniface colored enamel medallion (ND), circa. 2000s; no artist mark, manufactured by "GN" company; weight: 55.2g; size: 59.75mm.

Depicts coat of arms of the Jewish Autonomous region in center with multicolored stripe flashes (flag of the Jewish region), an olive(?) branch and Russian legend around edge "Jewish Autonomous Oblast" ("Yevreyskaya Avtonomnaya Oblast").

The oblast ("region") is located in far eastern Russia near the Chinese border, and founded in 1934 by Stalin as part of his overall policy of separating out Russia's various minority nationalities into remote regions but encouraging their non-nationalistic growth and socialist development there.

In this case, Birobidzhan was his attempt to ween Jews off of Zionist and any religious affiliations, though the region never became popular among Jews of their own accord. Fewer than 18,000 Jews lived there in 1939, and today there are only around 2,000 Jews there. In UNC.
