Australia, Victoria, "Levy Brothers" Jewish merchant token, 1889; struck in nickel by Stokes & Martin of Melbourne; weight: 9.2g; size: 30.25mm.

Obverse bears 4 line legend "LEVY BROS & Co LONSDALE St.E MELBOURNE" surmounted by wreath and date below; on reverse bust of Queen Victoria. Medallic rotation; beeded rim on obverse and reverse; plain rim.

In 1852 the Levy brothers, Goodman, Nathaniel and Lewis, established a luxury goods warehouse and importing business on Lonsdale Street, and the following year added a few more shops to their business. The business was still operating in 1912 on Lonsdale Street but by then also with branches in London, Hamburg and New York. In VF with a hole on the top and bottom of the token.

Germany, Hamburg Jewish-Christian Calendar medal ("kalendermedaille") for 1804-5565; struck in silver; by Abraham Abrahamson (unmarked); 42.5mm, 20.45g.

Obverse depicts annual dates for Sundays for each month, with the Jewish year "5565" and holiday dates below; on obverse, intricate table with operating times of the Hamburg city (castle) gates.

This calendar medal was commissioned by a Hamburg coin dealer, Jobst Schramm, and struck for him by the famous Jewish medalist Abraham Abramson of Berlin; the inclusion of Jewish dates and holidays, as part of the commissioned work, underscores the relative importance of the Jewish merchant community of the city at that time (JM-78).

In VF+/EF: all details fully visible and relatively little wear, but a few small surface nicks in places; Feille-3776; Gaedechen #2006, vol. 3; JM-78/143.

Germany, Prussia; Jewish-Christian calendar medal (Kalendermedaille), 1804/5565; struck in white metal; by [Daniel Friedrich] Loos; weight: 19.25g; size: 44mm.

Obverse bears device of sun shining in center with dates "1804" above and "5565" [Hebrew date, from Sept. 1804 onwards] below, with 3 more rings around it containing text and dates, and bordered title at top "Calender".

On reverse intricate calendar with symbols for moon phases, seasonal dates at top and birthdates of Prussia's royal family below (King Friedrich Wilhelm III on 3 August [1770]). Of Jewish interest are the references and dates for "Jüdischen Ostern" ["Jewish Easter" - Passover], "Zerstörung Jerusalems" ["Destruction of Jerusalem" - Tisha Be'Av], "Versöhnung" ["Reconciliation" - Yom Kippur] and "Lauberhüt" [Sukkot].

Although Prussian Jewry was granted municipal citizenship in 1808 and then full citizenship in 1812, Frederick William III did not support the latter's implementation and instead promoted restrictive legislation against Jews during his reign.

Jewish calendar medals such as this are well documented for the years 1804-1805 (JM-78), specifically in Hamburg where there Jewish merchant class was highly regarded; for Prussia, this type of medal is almost unknown, and the possible connection between Prussia and Jewry probably lies in the appreciation felt for Friedrich Wilhelm III's predecessor, Friedrich Wilhelm II, who in his time (1786-97) instituted a series of reforms granting the Jews greater rights - for otherwise, no significant Jewish legislation took place between 1797 and 1804.

In VF-EF, with excellent detail and much original luster; slightly uneven planchet.

Great Britain, London; E. Moses & Son calendar medal, 1856; struck in silvered tin; no makers mark; weight: 16.85g; size: 40.5mm.

Obverse depicts left facing bust of the Duke of Wellington (Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley) with dates of his birth and death; on reverse a calendar of the dates of Sundays for the year 1856. In EF-AU, with much original luster; planchet a little uneven though no signs of any damage which would have caused this.

Wellington was the hero of the Battle of Waterloo against Napoleon (1815), served as British Prime Minister (1828-30) and as commander in chief of the British army until his death (1852). The token may commemorate him among other reasons because the firm manufactured uniforms.

Elias Moses (1783-1868), a Jewish clothing retailer and manufacturer, established his business in 1832, gradually developed it into a major chain which was distinguished by its novel concept at that time of operating on low margins with a high sales turnover, and for its advertising techniques. Elias married the daughter of his competitor, Hyam Hyams, another major Jewish clothes retailer (whose merchant tokens are featured here). By the 1860's E.Moses & Son was one of the most important retailers of ready-made clothes in Britain.

New Zealand, Wellington, "Lipman Levy" one penny Jewish merchant token (ND), circa. 1857-1880; struck in copper; no artist mark but medallist is W. J. Taylor of London; weight: 15.2g; size: 34.75mm.

Obverse legend around edge "LIPMAN LEVY | WELLINGTON . NEW ZEALAND" and 5 lined legend in center "IMPORTER AND MANUFACTURER OF BOOTS & SHOES".

Reverse legend around edge "ONE PENNY TOKEN | PAYABLE AT L.LEVY'S LAMBTON QUAY" and 6 lined legend in center "LEATHER & GRINDERY OF ALL DESCRIPTION THE TRADE SUPPLIED". Coin rotated strike; milled edges on obverse and reverse; plain rim. In EF with nice toning; Andrews #321 and Atkins #327.

Lipman Levy was born in London but moved to Wellington in 1842, and opened a business importing and manufacturing shoes and tools for shoemakers and leatherworkers ("grindery). His business issued a total of four tokens between the years 1857 and 1880 (when Levy died) - 3 varieties of Pennies and 1 half-penny. Taylor retained the dies he made for Lipman and some of the Lipman designs appear as mules of other New Zealand merchants. The tokens were all demonetised in 1897.

Romania, Bucuresci (Hunedoara County, Transylvania) "Jsak [Isaac] Focşaner" Zionist coffee and tea house token for 10 Bani (ND), circa. early 1920's; struck in brass; no maker marks; weight: 4.3g; size: 25.5mm.

Obverse bears narrowed Star of David with Hebrew word "Zion" in center, with Romanian legend around edge "Jsak Focşaner * Bucuresci *"; on reverse number "10" in center with legend around edge "Cafenea si Ceainerie Moderna" ["Modern Coffee and Tea House" - note the French influence of the word "Ceain" as "Ceainerie"] with rosette device at base. Medallic rotated strike; beeded edge on obverse and reverse. In VF.

Transylvania came under Romanian control following the Versailles treaty of 1920 (hence the estimated dating of this token); the city of Bucuresci (not to be confused with Bucuresti - Bucharest, the capital but spelled - oddly - on the token without the accented "ş") is located in Hunedoara country, which, according to Jewish history sources, was part of a region populated by Reform Jews desiring integration and assimilation, as opposed to the more Orthodox Jews in the rest of Romania who identified more with Zionism and emigration.

A possible reason for the word "Zion" appearing on this token lies with the proprietor's name, "Focsaner" - "of the city of Focşani": during the period of the first "Aliya" (immigration wave to Palestine of religious Jews, 1860-1903 - many sources even date the first Aliya from 1881), as a result of the influence of this unorganized movement, on 30-31 December 1881, the First Congress of all Zionist Unions in Romania for the promotion of settlement in Eretz Israel (Palestine) was held in the west Romanian city of Focsani.

This congress, held 16 years before Dr. Theodore Herzl's First "World Zionist Organization" Congress in Basel (1897), had a major influence on Romanian Jews, and the coffee house proprietor, probably eschewing the significance of that event took the city's name as his own surname and promoted Zionism through his business work in the more Reform region of Hunedoara.

St. Helena, "Solomon Dickson and Taylor" half penny token (ND), circa. 1821; struck in copper(?); no artist mark; weight: 7.15g; size: 28.75mm.

Obverse legend "Payable at St. Helena" with business name in center on 5 lines; on reverse signature device at center with title around edge "One Half Penny". Coin rotated strike; beeded edge; possibly milled rim.

The merchant Saul Solomon is believed to have arrived at the island of Saint Helena about 1790, where he formed the Solomon Dickson and Taylor company (the latter two possibly being London partners); in 1821, the business issued its own copper currency of 70,560 halfpennies probably to bolster local trade, and these circulated alongside the British East India Company's local coinage until the Crown took over the Island in 1836. In VF; Atkins p.243 #5

United States > Minnesota?: Menter clothes store $1 token (ND), 1960's?; gilded metal; size: 32.75mm; weight: 10.35g.

Obverse bears eagle with legend above and below "Clothing on Credit | Menter | Satisfaction Honor Service".

On reverse emblem of "1oo" surmounted by three lines of legend: "Good for One Dollar | On Purchase of $10 or More | Good as Gold | One to a Customer | Cash This To Day". Coin alignment.

The Menter clothing company was once a large chain of stores in the midwest, and tokens similar to this one were produced with state or city names, for Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. Some sources suggest that it began in Rochester, New York as the "Menter and Rosenbloom" clothing company around 1908-1912 before becoming "Menter Stores". The mass-produced 'feel' of the token suggests it's from the 1960's (eg. post-War).

Obverse legend "Kramer's Recreation Room Imperial Nebr."

On reverse "Good for 5¢ in Trade". Coin alignment; beeded circular frame on obverse and reverse.

Though part of a collection of Jewish merchant tokens, in all likelihood, similar to other tokens of this type, because of the remote location of the town, the Kramer who ran this establishment was probably a non-Jew of German origin.

Obverse legend "Mitzel and Welder | Lunch-Room and Schmidt's Beer Parlor | Schaaf Mpls. | Napoleon, N.D.". On reverse "Good for 10¢ in Trade". Medallic alignment.

Napoleon was founded in the 1880s by immigrants from Germany and Volga-Germans (Russia), though available research suggests that the proprietors of these businesses (indeed the townsfolk as a whole) were not Jewish (though our consignor collected this piece as part of his collection of Jewish merchant tokens): Welder, may have been Paul Welder, whose house was a rectory; Mitzel may have been Martin Mitzel, who ran his own beer parlor.
