Bauhaus in Jerusalem: Seven black and white photographs of West (Jewish) Jerusalem 1930s-40s, part of a series of pictures taken by "approved military photographers" - in this case "Number 128" (and stamped as such, by Palphot, on the reverse, with the price of 10 Mils a piece). The photos include a picture of the famous Generali building - unique in the country for its Italian 'Fascist' style of architecture - on upper Jaffo Street before the 'Bevingrad' roadblocks, the Bauhaus-styled Barclay's Bank building on the end of Jaffo Street across from the Old City; the front of the King David Hotel; a full-frontal shot of the YMCA building (across from the King David Hotel); a street scene of Jaffo Street taken from the intersection with King George Street; a view of the Anglo-Palestine Bank building on Jaffo Street with the General Post Office building behind it - and numerous British soldiers on the street; a view of Jerusalem-stone styled Bauhaus buildings (on King George Street?). Excellent condition; the photo of the Bank has some dirt marks.

Eretz-Israel / Palestine Aqir town urban development map, 1938: the survey, prepared by H. Ramberg in October 1938 for the firm "Gan Hadar Bet" on a scale of 1:2500 (and details on a scale of 1:625) on wax-coated fabric-paper, shows certain blocks and parcels of land for future development. Interestingly, Aqir was at that time an Arab town - originally an ancient Philistine town (until abandoned during the 1948 War of Independence afterwhich arose the Jewish town of Kiryat Ekron), but the survey is in English and in Hebrew - perhaps because the survey was prepared and stored in Tel Aviv. The Hebrew lettering is in the modern block font of that time. This is an original certified copy, dated and signed by the licensed surveyor in 1939. Clear in detail and in preserved condition, suitable for framing.
Item Code: 0070004 Price: $15

Eretz-Israel / Palestine Hebrew-language original survey for a planned building in Ramat Gan, 1937: the plan, on a scale of 1:250, shows the outline of a building to be erected on Block 6127 and Parcel 135 A, between Bialik Street and Ha'Yeled ["The Child"] Boulevard. The plan shows three sections of the parcel for development - "A" for the building in question, "B" for the space of a possible future building opposite the one in "A", and "C", a space perhaps for a small patch of lawn. The plan was prepared by A. Levin and Ch. Ramberg Engineers, Certified Surveyors (and signed by Ramberg), in Tel Aviv though is stamped "Not for Registration Purposes". Crisp in design, with the large artistic block Hebrew font of the time, whose original inks still shine under the light. Suitable for framing.
Item Code: 0070005 Price: $15

Eretz-Israel / Palestine Esh Sheikh Muwannis urban development map, 1940: an interesting survey depicting a small section of land now part of Ramat Aviv - the area of today's Hayarkon Park, Derekh Namir road, Ibn Gvirol street and Sderot Rokach. The survey is in 1:1250 scale and highly detailed, in English and in Hebrew, and prepared by H. Ramberg for the "Hadar Yossef" Cooperative Society. The survey was originally prepared by Ramberg in July 1939, with the original copy certified by him in late July that same year; this copy dated from 1940 shows Ramberg's certification of corrections since made, and a stamp from the Mandatory Government's Surveyor ("Survey of Palestine") that the map is acceptible for registration purposes. In preserved condition and suitable for framing.
Item Code: 0070006 Price: $15

Scarce set of 2 colored urban development plans, 1943, for a block and parcels of land in an area between Ra'anana and Ghabat-El Ababisha, in the Samaria district (Ra'anana is a Jewish town while Ghabat-El Ababisha is one of many formerly Arab villages destroyed during the 1948 War of Independence; in its place now stand Kiryat Ganim, Kiryat Sharet and Kfar Batya). The plans, on a scale of 1:2500, are near-identical sets of partition schemes of parcels of land and the maps depict then-existing and new roads; both were prepared by H. Ramberg the surveyor for a promoter called E. Klimovski (who has written his name as "Klimowsky" on one of the copies, and signed his name that way on the other). The copy with Klimowsky's signature shows more pencilled in details of the planned building sites on the map, and these additions may date from November 1943. Both papers are in English only and stamped "Not for Registration Purposes". Both in excellent condition and suitable for framing.

Old Palestine building code document, 1924: a diagram of a house roof in the Arab village of Jubnet Ammad (in the Jaffa district) detailed in a Survey of Palestine document. The sheet is a September 1924 copy of a description logged in in July of that year. A rare glimpse of early Tel Aviv-Jaffa development.

Eretz Israeli Tel Aviv original development map, 1930: for a residential building of 689 square meters in the Tel Nordau area (around today's Bugrashov and Frishman streets). The diagram was prepared on 15 June 1930 on a scale of 1/250 for Dr's. Fabrikant and Segal (the landowner of the space seems to be Fabrikant), and is almost entirely in Hebrew for one single square building with an inside courtyard on the plot of land. Pencilled around the sketch are probably the adjoining landowners: Dr. Segal, Mintz, and Furia. A nice sketch from a well known location at early stage of Tel Aviv's development.
Item Code: 0070013 Price: $15

Eretz Israeli Tel Aviv original development map, 1930: for a commercial area of about 700 square meters in the southern district of the city. The diagram, prepared 10 April 1930 on a scale of 1/250 for an A. Guzman (the landowner of the commercial space), is mostly in Hebrew, with a few English words written in places, and appears to be for one single building on the plot of land. Of interest are actually the names of other land-owners written just above the sketch, on the fringes of the adjoining piece of land: Dankner (most probably the media and real-estate magnates of today), Lurie and Steinberg. A nice sketch of documenting development in old Tel Aviv.

Eretz-Israel / Palestine Esh Sheikh Muwannis urban development map, 1939: original copy of a survey depicting a thin strip of land now part of Ramat Aviv. This map is related to the one depicted in item 0070006, and the block of land here (# 6623) would be just south of the one described above - the area of today's Bnei Dan street, just below the Yarkon river, and continuing on to former "Es Sawalima" - an Arab village in whose place has been built today's Ramat Ha'Chayal. The survey is in 1:2500 scale and detailed, in English with a little Hebrew, and prepared by H. Ramberg for the "Hadar Yossef" Cooperative Society. In preserved condition and suitable for framing.

Postcards of Israel's first President (Chaim Weitzmann) and Prime Minister (David Ben-Gurion), late 1940's - early 1950's. Four undated postcards, two of each leader, from the Moshe Chalutz press. They bear the rough, rudimentary black and white appearance of the country's first postcards but are undated. Judging by slight variations in the fonts, it appears that the cards were published at different times (different editions) albeit during the same period. On he reverse of one of the cards of Ben-Gurion someone has subsequently added the date of his passing and his age at the time. Also included in this lot are two postcards of Theodore Herzl - one brown and white and another in color, all undated. All cards are in good, preserved condition except for a few nicks on the corner of one Ben-Gurion card and the colored Herzl card, somewhat frayed on the edges and back.

Topographic Map of Israel (1949), whose grandiose title belies the pride of the time, just after the War of Independence: "Land of Israel: Map for Knowledge of the Homeland - for Youth and for the Nation"; edited by Katz Lurie and David Benvenishti, and "Approved by the Education Department for use in Classes". Published by "Kiryat Sefer", Jerusalem and Litho-offset by Epstein, Tel Aviv. The map covers the region from From El Arish (Egypt - captured by Israel in 1948 and relinquished) in the west, to Sidon (Lebanon) in the north, and Damascus (Syria) and Amman (Jordan) in the east. Some points of interest are: Um Rash Rash (Eilat) does not yet appear on the map, though Aqaba is mentioned; the 'Gaza Strip' is not illustrated with borders and peacefully blends in with the green color of the coastal plain; Ashdod is spelled "Asdod"; Kiryat Ata is called "Kfar Ata". Major cities are lablelled in the then modern 'Aharoni' Hebrew font. A lovely map, suitable for hanging in excellent condition. Has a few small holes in folds. Green illustrated paperback sleeve on reverse, with index of towns and cities.

"Steimatzky's" map of divided Jerusalem, "Jerusalem: Old and New", 1949. A unqiue edition of this colored map: originally published in 1941, it underwent a revision in 1949 for which the armistice lines between Israel and [Trans]Jordan were added, and the phrase "Made in Palestine" was blocked out and replaced by "Made in Israel". Drawn by Shlomo Ben David and originally printed by Offset Bezalel, this 1949 edition was printed by Monson Press in Jerusalem.

The obverse features a colored street and site map for central Jerusalem, all in English, from Machane Yehuda in the west to the Mount of Olives in the east; showing Jewish-Israeli 'western Jerusalem, the Old City (and Jewish Quarter) in Transjordanian-controlled 'east' Jerusalem, the demarcation lines, the western limits of the Israeli military zone, and the demilitarized areas of Hadassah Hospital and the Hebrew University in the north, and the Agricultural School and Government House in the south. The revised overprints also include Mandelbaum Gate, which became the main transit point between Israeli and Jordanian-controlled Jerusalem between 1949 and 1967. The key also includes a few translations in Hebrew, chiefly zone demarcations and a note that the zone lines can only be entered with a special permit.

The reverse of the map is a text accompaniment to the sites highlighted on the map, with some updates to accounts for recent events in 1948. The cover is in green and shows the new western suburbs of the city, not included in the main map. Steimatzky's is Israel main bookstore chain and the major distributor of English-language publications, founded in 1925 in Jerusalem. Suitable for hanging, with a few age stains and a very small (1.5 cm) tear on the fold line at the bottom; significant and lovely.
Item Code: 0010198 Price: $300

Two maps by Sebastian Munster from Cosmographiae Universalis, Latin edition, Liber. V, pages 1001 - 1002, published by Heinrich Petri, Basel, 1550. The first map is a colored woodcut of "Palestine" 262 x 170 mm (ref. Laor no. 528): it's a full page longitudinal map depicting Syria and Palestine, with the shoreline running from southern Anatolia to the Nile delta. Depicting the conception of that time, the image of the Jordan River also shows its supposed two sources: the Jor and the Dan. There are also Latin inset explanatory texts.

The second map (on page "1001") is a black and white half-page woodcut of "Syria" 124 x 156 mm (ref. Laor 527), drawn after Ptolemaeus' Tabula IIII Asiae.

Sebastian Munster (1488 - 1552) was a German mathematician and cartographer. His most important work was his Cosmographia, which first appeared in 1544 and included 26 woodcut maps. Munster died of the plague in 1552.

UNIQUE Original Eretz Israel memorabilia - a beautiful and rare booklet - "Flowers of the Holy Land" - of 8 hand-drawn and color-painted 'postcards' depicting key attractions of the developing community in Palestine, plus a cover page.

The cards are color prints of hand-made depictions, and though undated, based on the sites highlighted within (the Great Synagogue of Tel Aviv - founded 1918; the Hebrew University - opened 1925), it is possible to date this production to around 1925-27. The eight prints include scenes of the Mosque of Omar (Dome of the Rock) in Jerusalem; the Hebrew University in Jerusalem; a landscape scene of Bethlehem; the Great Mosque of Hebron; a sparse-looking Allenby Street in Tel Aviv (with the Great Synagogue in the foreground); a view from Mount Carmel of Haifa and Haifa Bay; and a view of Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee. The booklet is written in Hebrew, English and French (in that order), with these languages and German also appearing as subtitles on the bottom of each card. Cards depicting Jewish or Zionist themes have the Hebrew message on them: "For a Good (New) Year, Write and Sign". The cards are separated by a thin sheet of protective paper, and on the back of some cards is written (in the 3 main languages), "Flowers from the Holy Land".

The booklet is hard-bound by cardboard with protected edges and a brown bound back with the title in English. One of the cards (Haifa Bay) is loose, but to protect the physical integrity of the booklet, I have not scanned the other plates here. An exquisite and unique sample of early Eretz Israel memorabilia and touristic mementos.

Israeli austerity period food program price list, March 1955. The Israeli period of austerity ('Tzena') took place between 1949 and 1959. To cope with shortages of food and raw materials as a result of the War of Independence, the absorption of a million new immigrants, the need to stabilize the local currency and economic sanctions by neighboring Arab states, Israel instituted an austerity program in April 1949 based on coupons and points, which allocated pre-determined rationed amounts of foodstuffs and later, other materials to its citizens.

The program was originally led by Canadian-born lawyer Bernard (Dov) Yosef - former civilian commander of wartime Jerusalem - and the then "Minister of Austerity" and the allocation of foodstuffs was determined by an American expert. The newspapers would announce the time and area of food distribution, along with the price and necessary coupon booklet vouchers for the acquisition. The program later grew to encompass clothing, furniture and even housing, serving as a method of establishing a national "bottom line" standard of living and Israeli-styled tone to daily social standards.

This pricelist was issued by the 'Food Division' of the Ministry of Trade and Industry for the period March-April 1955. It lists the prices in the old Protot and Agurot currency of the day, for such items as sugar, jam, rice, coffee, tee, fats and eggs - all measured by increments of grams. The list shows prices for "meat" and "fillet fish". There is a special box for "Additional Servings" for pregnant women and 'workers doing hard physical work, and another box listing foodstuffs for which no vouchers are necessary - imported cheese, white flour, cocoa powder, filled chocolate, and others. One box also lists which voucher codes are needed for each type of foodstuff, and other small box reminds the reader to tune in to the Voice of Israel radio every morning at 7:10 for announcements by the Ministry, and also on certain days at 12:30 for a program sponsored by the Ministry, called the "Household Corner". For those familiar with Israeli-styled customer service (or lack thereof), there is even a box regarding complaints by the public and to whom to 'go' (i.e. not to write to) regarding those issues.

A remarkable sobering but nostalgic document of a country that has since become a hub for high-tech. Framed and lovely, with some wear-tears at the top and some discoloration stains.

Eretz Israel memorabilia album: "Mishmar Ve'Sport" ('Defense and Sport'), a handsomely designed hardbound album produced by the 'Dubek' cigarette company for the purpose of assembling collectible picture cards which came in packages of their cigarettes; circa. 1939. Children at that time would collect and trade these cards, and this album was provided free as a location in which to store and display the pictures. The album is 66 pages long and contains all 289 cards; in excellent, preserved condition.

"Defense and Sport - seriousness and games" - as the preface points out, "are seemingly opposing entities, though each one characterizes skills which are the most exalted and raised by man and nation: heroism and freedom, strength and redemption, courage and honor".

The album is arranged in the following subjects:
  • "Defense", which includes chapters on 'defenders of the homeland', 'training of the notrim [Jewish settlement police]', 'defense and labor', 'towers and fortification', '"On Guard"', 'the mobile guard ["noded"]', 'attack and defense', 'keepers of order and transportation', 'the [boy and girl] scouts';
  • "Light Athletics", which includes chapters on 'running', 'running and jumping', 'pole vaults and shot puts', 'javelin and discus', 'aerobics'; "Heavy Athletics", including chapters on 'boxing', 'wrestling', 'weight lifting';
  • "Sports", which includes chapters on 'football', 'hand-ball', 'hockey', 'basketball and volleyball', 'tennis and ping-pong', 'fencing and horse-riding', 'water sports', and 'sports associations';
  • "Conquest of the Land", which includes chapters on 'conquest of the terrain', 'towards the sea' and 'conquest of the air'.
Each section and several of the chapters includes writeups on the relevant subjects, and in the sports sections in particular, many statistics on records and achievements.

Adorned with water-colored inside cover pictures of a "tower and stockade" kibbutz and the Dubek factory, the album pages are neatly laid out, with modern fonts and design styles of the time; each card frame has a description, and each section contains elaborations on what each card depicts. For collectors, the photos reveal a variety of details, emblems and insignia; for enthusiasts there are many facts and details about sports personalities and norms of the time. Interesting corners of specialty are the sections on 'conquest of the terrain', in which the stage-by-stage erection of "tower and stockade" kibbutzim is depicted, and the section 'conquest of the air' illustrates rarely seen images of aviation and aviators in Eretz Israel.

Overall the album is lovlingly presented, in good taste and stout pride by the makers, who in closing write that the purpose of the album is to capture images of the national revival movement, whose purpose is to "create a new Jewish character, a man who is healthy, good-looking, sure of himself and stands with his own two feet on the ground, connected to nature and with his familiarity of his physical prowess he overcomes the realities of life and and joins as a piece, through discipline, the whole of the nation in its coming into being". A wonderful testament of old Eretz Israel, simpler times, and unvarnished aspirations.

Poster - silk screen print on board, advertising the Israeli shipping line "Zim" and exhorting: "Have a Good Time - Go With Zim" (it rhymes in Hebrew). At bottom is listed the different steam ships operated by Zim: 'Zion', 'Israel', 'Theodore Herzl', 'Jerusalem', 'Moledet'. Circa early 1960's. Zim began operations before the establishment of the State of Israel, and between 1945-49 provided critical logistical support, supplying the state with materials during the War of Independence and in transporting refugees to the State.

The S.S. "Jerusalem" was 40 years old when acquired in 1953; she was formerly the S.S. "Bergensfjord", built in 1913, maintaining regular transit between Norway and New York, especially during the First World War. In 1940, she left Norway two days before the German invasion and came into the service of the British Ministry of War Transport. After the war she was taken over by Home Lines and renamed S.S. "Argentina", after which she was acquired by Zim. In 1955, with the acquisition of a new ship, she was renamed the "Aliya". The S.S. "Zion" and "Israel" were both built in 1953 under the Reparation Payments Agreement. In the same framework, the Herzl was launched in 1957. "Moledet" joined the Zim fleet in 1961, from France, as a former luxury liner. Photographed here in protective plastic. Excellent condition.

Eretz Israel Hebrew book "Khoma u'Migdal" [Tower and Stockade]: "The New Settlement in the Years of Siege", by Bracha Kheves, 1939; published by the Childens' Center ("mercaz ha'noar") of the Workers Union ("histadrut ha'poalim"), Tel Aviv; 190 pages, many with photographs; thick illustrated paper dust jacket.

This is a rare, then-contemporary testament to a unique movement within the Jewish-Zionist settlement of Eretz Israel: during the 1936-1939 Arab Revolt in Palestine, and on the heels of the findings of the Peel Commission (the 1936-37 Palestine Royal Commission) which recommended the partition of Palestine into two states - one Jewish and one Arab - the Zionist movement at the end of 1936 embarked on the creation of "tower and stockade" settlements in Palestine. These were literally wooden square-walled settlements with a tower overlooking the surrounding areas and designed to both give protection to its inhabitants and also - in the language of the time - to "create facts on the ground" in time for the partition of Palestine. During the period of the Arab revolt, between 52 and 60 such settlements (there are arguments to this day over which settlements were really built according to the style) were built: based on an initiative by Shlomo Gur and promoted chiefly by the main Jewish defence organization, the "Hagana", the whole spectrum of the Zionist political and defense establishment supported this movement which became a mass undertaking at the time - the Workers' Union (the "Histadrut"), the Jewish National Fund, the Jewish Agency, the Jewish Settlement Police (the "Notrim"), the Socialist "Kibbutz Artzi" and "Shomer Ha'Tzair" as well as the Revisionist "Beitar" movements, among others. In a rare unity of force, all involved factions helped create pre-fabricated segments of planned new settlements, transport the materials and builders, whilst providing cover and defense - often in large overnight operations. Some of the settlements built in the movement were Kfar Shmaryahu, Ginossar, Nir David, Kfar Masaryk and Kfar Ruppin.

This book documents, at the very period of the events, in words and photographs the culture and spirit of the movement, and the stories of its various projects which in their sum total became the movement of "tower and stockade" settlement. The locations of these settlements strengthened the defence of existing Jewish population centers, and in 1946-47 played a decisive role in determining the separation boundaries of the United Nations partition plan for Palestine. In very good condition, with a surface scuff on the front, age stains in places and minor wear along the cover's edges; stamped on reverse by "S. Tredler" Books and Newspapers of Tel Aviv (whose original price - 60 Mils - is pencilled on the front corner of the cover).

Early Charles de Gaulle publicity coverage - in Hebrew, 1941: a 61-page paperback booklet, number 4 of the then wartime series of booklets on personalities and leaders called "People and Events", entitled "General Charles de-Gaulle", written by Dr. David Shochat and published by Din press in Tel Aviv with the assistance of the "Association for Free France in Eretz Israel", whose chairman, M. L. Gorodisky wrote the preface.

The book covers De-Gaulle's childhood, military background and experience, the fall of France and his positions regarding the need to create a new army and liberate Europe. Call to duty: "To Recruitment and To Defense" ('Le'Hitgaysut U'Le'Hagana'), a pamphlet of four speeches delivered by Yitzhak Tabenkin; published by the Kibbutz Ha'Meuchad Press under the auspicies of the General Labor Union for Hebrew Workers in Eretz Israel (the 'Histadrut'), in Ein Harod, May 1942; 28 pages. This publication is a "special printing from the booklet 'From Within', due to be released shortly".

Yitzhak Tabenkin, born in Byelorussia, was a key founder and spiritual leader of the 'Kibbutz' movement in Eretz Israel: he was among the founders of the 'Poalei Zion' movement in Poland; immigrating to Eretz Israel in 1911 he was one of the founders of the country's chief labor union (the Histadrut), in 1920. He fought alongside Joseph Trumpeldor at Tel Hai in 1920 and subsequently joined the Labor Battalion named after Trumpeldor in 1921. He helped found Kibbutz Ein Harod, and later also Ha'Kibbutz Ha'Meuchad of which he was its spirital leader.

Though leading a socialist movement, Tabenkin did not support partition of Eretz Israel and championed an ideology which called for the greater settlement and Jewish labor to keep Eretz Israel in Jewish hands. The speeches in this pamphlet, all from 1942, call for Jewish activism (recruitment) in labor and defense of the country in the face of the coming threat of the German Army. The speches are a mixture of concern for the safety of the socialist homeland (the USSR) and for the need to protect the Jewish homeland both on the labor 'front' and the military front; Tabenkin calls both for the strengthening of the Workers Party and also for enlistment in national defense. The final speech was delivered on the occasion of May Day (1 May 1942).

Tabenkin's politics were a mixture of beliefs from the left and from the right: he helped found and lead the Israel Workers Party (Mapa'i) together with Ben Gurion and Katznelson, though in the same year the State was founded (1948), he founded and led the Israeli Communist Party; in 1968 he founded the Movement for Greater Israel (although it aligned itself with the Labor Party). The pamphlet is in excellent, preserved condition though the center page is loose. The back of the booklet is stamped with the original price of 20 Mils. Scarce and significant.

Eretz Israel prepares for emergencies: "First Aid and Movement of Wounded", booklet by Dr. V. Nisel; Hebrew edition edited by Dr. Yehuda Matot, published by Lifshitz Press, Jerusalem, 1939; 72 pages. The booklet, with thick paper covers, was published under the auspicies of the Organization for National Associations of the Magen David Adom for Quick Help (in Tel Aviv), and intended for use by the "Supplementary Police" ('Notrim') of Eretz Israel.

Containing standard content for first aid and evacuation of the wounded, this heavily illustrated guide is unique for the heavy photographic accompaniment of Notrim in uniform performing these procedures. For militaria enthusiasts the photographs are revealing and unique; for Eretz Israel collectors the booklet is significant for its purely domestic content - it is not a translation of a foreign publication void of local references (as many such manuals here were). The cover contains a quotation from the Torah "Whoever saves a life saves the world entire". Overall in good condition and intact, though the cover is stained and dirty, and the pages have been marked by liquid spillage. Rare and interesting.

"Marxism and the National Question", by J. [Josef] Stalin, published by the Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow, 1945; 80 pages. This softcover book / pamphlet is a reprint of Stalin's January 1913 treatise, and it "follows the latest Russian edition published in 1941", according to the publisher's note. A strongly anti-Zionist piece written in revolutionary prose, the pamphlet was published at tragically ironic times for Jewish history, and even as late as 1945 it raises disturbing questions about Stalin's relationship with Jewry. The cover is semi-thick paper, in green; overall the book is in good condition though the cover is weak and flaking in places.

Revisionist daily newspaper "HaMashkif" ('The Observer'), 6 June 1947 edition. An 8-page copy of the right-wing Revisonist movement's newspaper, in very fine - extremely fine condition (with a fold in the center and a few minor tears at the sides). This edition's stories include a headline that "Creech-Jones tells Golda Meyerson (Meir): the Immigration Won't be Increased"; other stories include coverage of mail-bombs sent to 11 prominent British statemen (with implications for the Revisionist-affiliated 'Etzel'/'Irgun' underground movement), an alarm about the worsening condition of Romanian Jewry, calls by President Truman to avoid illegal activities in Eretz Israel (against the backdrop of the Congress's forthcoming session to determine America's stance on the Palestinian 'problem' before the UN investigating commitee).

Founded in 1938, the paper featured the writings of the Revisionist movement's founding-father, Ze'ev Jabotinsky; one of the paper's first editors was Ben-Tzion Netanyahu (father of the former Prime Minister and current Finance Minister), and among this edition's contributors was Aba Achimeir (Heisnovitz) - the ideological founder of the 'Etzel'/'Irgun' and 'Lechi' underground movements, and Avraham Almaliach - the leader of the Sephardic community in Palestine.

JEWISH CARPETS / ZIONIST WEAVES and RUGS:

Herbert Samuel (facing right), circa. 1920-1925; machine pile weave made in Jerusalem by the Alliance Israelite Universelle School; size, circa. 57cm x 107cm.

Samuel was the a Jew, and the first High Commissioner of Palestine under the British Mandate. His arrival was seen by the local Jewish community as, literally, the coming of the Messiah (described first-hand in the documentary series "Pillar of Fire"). During his tenure (1920-1925), in 1922, the British Government published a 'White Paper' supporting Jewish immigration to Palestine.

Of the AIU School's weave designs it is interesting to note that although most of their works commemorate Jewish and non-Jewish Zionists, non-Governmental figures (like Weizmann and Nordau below) have more ornamental designs, also incorporating a Star of David (even though Samuel himself was also Jewish), whereas "official" figures receive more staid and restrained designs. Felton-17.

Chaim Weizmann (facing left), circa. 1917-1920/31; machine pile weave made in Jerusalem by the Alliance Israelite Universelle School; size, circa. 57cm x 107cm.

Weizmann became president of the British Zionist Federation in 1917, working with foreign secretary Arthur Balfour to obtain from the British Government the landmark "Balfour Declaration", which decreed that the British government viewed favorably the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine for the Jewish people.

Weizmann subsequently became president of the World Zionist Organization from 1920 until 1931, during which time he oversaw key events in the local Jewish community of Palestine, including the creation of the Jewish Battalions (1917) and the founding of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (1918). The carpet may be from as early as 1917-1920 given Weizmann's young appearance at that time (see photograph for reference); Felton-14.

Arthur James Balfour (facing right), circa. 1917-1920; machine pile weave made in Jerusalem by the Alliance Israelite Universelle School; size, circa. 60cm x 107cm.

Balfour was the British foreign secretary at the time in which he issued his "Balfour Declaration" (to Lord Rothschild) in 1917. Alhough he subsequently participated in numerous public events and private visits to the Jewish community in Palestine, he is best remembered locally for his 1917 Declaration (hence the estimated dating of the carpet). Similar to Felton-11 (facing left).

Max Nordau (facing right), circa. 1905-1911/1923; machine pile weave made in Jerusalem by the Alliance Israelite Universelle School; size, circa. 60cm x 107cm.

Nordau joined Theodore Herzl's mission to establish a world Zionist movement and helped co-found the World Zionist Organization (1897), serving as its president from 1905 to 1911. Nordau was particularly influential in the early years of the Organization and the spiritual founder of "muscular Judaism" (a movement promoting Jewish sportsmanship as an expression of self-respect and nationalism); during the First World War and thereafter his influence waned, and he died in 1923.

Some photographic evidence from Palestine of that time (1923; see photo for reference) suggests this carpet may have been created to commemorate his passing, though the AIU School had been producing Jewish/Zionist carpets since the turn of the 20th Century and this design may well date to that period instead. Similar to Felton-15 (facing left).
