Illustrated commemorative book: "Eighteen Months of the 11th Czechoslovak Infantry Battalion - East" ('Osmanact Mesicu'); printed in Jerusalem, Palestine, (October) 1942. This 64-page hardcover book, in Czech and English, pays tribute to the wartime service of this battalion of Czechoslovak exiled soldiers (including Jewish fighters) from France and Russia, who fought within the intricate machinery of the British forces in the Middle East and North Africa.

The book documents the creation, service and experiences of the Battalion for its 18 months of service - with photos and documents - from its inception and training in Gedera, Palestine (late 1940), to its passage through Egypt and duties in the Western Desert as part of the British 23rd Brigade, in Spring 1941; its participation in British incursion into Vichy Lebanon and Syria, in Summer 1941; its return to North Africa in October, this time to beseiged Tobruk, and then onwards to Benghazi and back again. Arriving back in Palestine in early 1942 the Battalion was disbanded and reformed in May of that year as the 200th Light Anti-Aircraft East Regiment (who in turn edited and produced this book). In 1943 the Regiment was transferred to Britain and disbanded, and elements of the unit served with existing Czechoslovak forces in exile there and later in France.

Though obscure, this well illustrated book pays tribute to a small and valiant force which saw action on many fronts. There are many pictures of the unit in training and field service, posing together with Polish forces in exile, in smart and ceremonial parades, and lovely pictures of the Middle East and desert landscapes of that time. The book is in excellent physical condition with complete and mostly crisp pages (some age stains on the initial inside pages), through the binding is loosened from the spine (though easily repairable).

"It's Your Empire" book by Alexander Campbell; published by Victor Gollancz, London, 1945. First edition; 'Left Book Club Edition - not for sale to the public'. An interesting survey of Britain's colonies and their problems, whose underlying motif is devolution and independence; one of the rare post-war tracts from the left that takes a sympathetic view towards Zionism and Jewish immigration to Palestine. 224 pages. In excellent condition with minor bends at the hardback corners.

Civil defense book: "Home Guard for Victory!", by Hugh Slater; published by Victor Gollantz, London, 1941, 5th impression; 120 pages. Part of the 'Victory Books' series (this one is # 10), the book is written by the former (and late) chief of operations of the International Brigade Staff, which served in Spain during the Civil War - characteristic of the leftist views promoted by the Gollantz press.

The book is as the subtitle says - "an essay" - and not an officially sanctioned presentation, presenting the formation as a useful and positive adjunct to the British armed forces. It delivers interesting analyses and prescriptions for how the Home Guard can be used for defending factories and strategic points; for repelling air landing; for attacking and engaging in street warfare. With many detailed diagrams and illustrations. A compelling and patriotic tract (even if the organization has come to be known as "Dad's Army"). Overall in good condition; some spots on the blue cloth cover; the inside page liner is a little torn.

Overall in good preserved condition, with light wear to the cover's edges and some staining on the edges of the first and last pages of the book. Rare.

"Marxism and the National Question", by J. [Josef] Stalin, published by the Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow, 1945; 80 pages. This softcover book / pamphlet is a reprint of Stalin's January 1913 treatise, and it "follows the latest Russian edition published in 1941", according to the publisher's note. A strongly anti-Zionist piece written in revolutionary prose, the pamphlet was published at tragically ironic times for Jewish history, and even as late as 1945 it raises disturbing questions about Stalin's relationship with Jewry. The cover is semi-thick paper, in green; overall the book is in good condition though the cover is weak and flaking in places.

"The Principle of Nationalities" by Israel Zangwill, published by Watts & Co., London, 1917; 96 pages. First edition. The book is part of a series published under the auspicies of the 'Conway Memorial Lectures', and is full speech delivered by Zangwill at South Place Institute on 8 March 1917. The book contains a preface by the Chairman, Percy Alden MP. The book is in blue fabric hardback, with gilt lettering on the cover and green text on the spine. In excellent condition, with just light corner wear. Zangwill was a British Jew and intellectual who began as a journalist and later published novels and books on the Jewish experience in Europe, becoming in the 20th Century probably the best known Jewish personality in the English-speaking world. He became a Zionist activist, and in 1905 formed the Jewish Territorial Organzation (ITO), with the goal of finding any geography (beyond Palestine) which could be suitable as a Jewish homeland - including Uganda, Canada, Australia and Mesopotamia amongst others.

Set of 3 documentary Zionist books: the first is an undated Israeli / Eretz Israel facsimile of Theodore Herzl's original German-language 1896 publication "Der Judenstaat", which outlined his vision of Jewish State. The second book is "The Protocols of the First Zionist Congress: 29-31 August 1897", in Hebrew, with a forward by surviving members of the First Congress; published by Ruben Mass, Jerusalem, Palestine, 1946. This soft-back volume includes a fold-out facsimile of the original ornate poster bearing the pictures of the Congress's participants; the book also contains photographs of important documents originating from the Congress. This volume is stamped "Review Copy" on the inside.

The third book is a yearbook of Zionism - "Israel Der Juden-Staat: Das Jahr Der Zionisten", by Georg Herlitz, published by Ullman-Verlag, 1949; a remarkable German-language publication full of information about the development of Eretz Israel since the mid-1800's: it contains a month-by-month calendar which records key events and personalities in the development of Israel; there is a photographic gallery of Zionist ideologists, members of the Congresses (and their national origins), and members of the new State's political parties. There is a rich supplement of photographs chronicalling the rise and development of Eretz Israel with many "before" and "after" pictures of developed areas; there are also informative pictures of original policy and ideological documents, as well as organization symbols. There are translated tracts of the program of the First Zionist Congress; the Balfour Declaration; and the Israeli Declaration of Independence.

Other remarkable resources include a detailed list of leadership, representation, dates and locations of the Zionist Congresses from 1897 to 1948, and a list of almost 400 Eretz Israel cities, towns and moshavs with their dates of establishment, size in Dunams, population, and trusteeship affiliations. There are also several nice graphic advertisements for businesses in Israel and Basel in the final pages of the book - including those for "Keren HaYesod", "Wizo", "Shemen" Industries, "Kapulski Brothers"(!), and more. A superb reference for collectors and historians. Overall in excellent condition though the back inside cover is slightly unbound from the spine.

"Bolshevism: Mr. Keeling's Five Years in Russia", scarce book by H. V. Keeling, a British author who lived and worked in Russia during the period of the Revolution. A fascinating first-hand account of the first years of the budding Soviet regime capturing the first period of upheaval and unstable establishment, and originally criticized on publication for its sympathetic view of the Soviets. Published by Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1919. First edition. Thick paper cover; overall in very good condition; 212 pages.

'The Military Strength of the Powers', by Max Werner (translated by Edward Fitzgerald); Victor Gollancz, London, 1939. First edition; Left Book Club edition. A fascinating view of the supposed strengths of the Soviet, German, French, British, Italian, Polish, Japanese and American militaries. Being published by a leftwing publisher, the emphasis on the Red Army is overt and observations about it tragically apologetic in hindsight: "The military strength of the Soviet Union... has its weak sides. [They] are... more a matter of the military strength of the country... i.e. a matter of war potential, rather than of the army itself." The Soviet war experience proved just the opposit. An interesting read. 376 pages.
