The following 3 items all relate to the same period in Israeli history and so are accompanied by a similar preface
Between the years 1938 and 1948 the Jewish community in Eretz Israel / Palestine (the "Yishuv") instituted a mechanism by which to raise funds for self-defense, and this initiative operated between 1938-1939 under the name "Kofer Ha'Yishuv" (sometimes translated too directly as the "People's Ransom Fund" and so perhaps it's more accurate to refer to it as the "Community Levy").
Unlike other forms of fundraising by the Yishuv, the "Kofer" was not a voluntary charity but an actual levy imposed on the Jewish residents of Palestine: although the British Mandatory government did impose compulsory taxes, these were relatively light and insufficient for the provision of various services to the Mandate's residents. Until the Arab Revolt of 1936-1939, the Jewish community had raised supplemental funds for areas like education through the issuance of vouchers called "Shekels" - donors who gave money received a "Shekel" token which entitled them to participate in elections to the Yishuv's various bodies.
The intensity of the Arab Revolt led to the inception of the "Tower and Stockade" ("Khoma u'Migdal" in Hebrew) settlement movement whereby barricaded Jewish agricultural settlements were created literally with wooden walls and a stockade, for additional protection; the Mandatory government also approved the foundation of special Jewish constabulary services. The constables, known initially as "Supernumary Police" and later as the "Special Police", the "Jewish Settlement Police", the "Special Night Squads" (of Orde Wingate) and even the "Palmach" shock companies formed the core of what came to be known in Hebrew as "Notrim" ("Constables") - or, as a cultural-military movement, the "Notrut".
With funds for these settlements and armed branches lacking, the Yishuv instituted the "Kofer ha'Yishuv". In this framework taxes were levied on imports, entertainment events, on drinks at coffee shops - and even as imposed contributions during key Jewish holidays. Evaders faced "honor courts" and the movement as a whole generated a culture of its own with slogans, jingles and informative booklets. In this context, residents were encouraged to donate items of precious metals, under the framework of an initiative called "Matat Takhshitim" ("giving of jewelry"), in exchange for which they would receive a 'token' in return - a ring, a pin, a document. In this regard there were men and women who even donated their wedding rings and so in exchange the Kofer fund gave male and female token rings in return, with the words "Kofer ha'Yishuv" stamped on them.

Kofer ha'Yishuv "Matat Tachshitim" silver pin: pin issued to those who contributed jewelry or articles of precious metals (a special initiative called "Matat Tachshitim" in Hebrew) in the framework of the "Community Levy" ("Kofer ha'Yishuv") in support of self-defence within the Jewish community ("Yishuv") in Palestine. The pin was designed by M. Moro of Jerusalem (stamped on the reverse) and depicts a "Tower and Stockade" ("Choma u'Migdal" in Hebrew) settlement surmounted by the legend "Kofer ha'Yishuv Matat Tachshitim for the Year 1938-1939"; with soldiered safety-pin reverse; weight: 3.65 grams. Very rare.

Eretz Israel 'Noter' (Hebrew Constable) "Meguyas" recruitment pin: metal pin issued to new recruits to one of the branches of the Jewish Supplementary Police (known collectively in Hebrew as the "Notrut"), 1936-1939. The pin features an image of a "Tower and Stockade" settlement with the Hebrew word "Meguyas" ("recruited") underneath, and a numbered label on the reverse (probably the recruit's issued number); the badge back is a simple soldiered pin; weight: 1.75 grams.
The "Notrut" movement was the first time the British Mandatory authorities approved a legal armed Jewish force in Palestine (after 1921), and it had multiple branches shared between the Palestine Police and later the British Army. The "notrim" (Hebrew Constables) were formed into the "Supplementary Police", the "Jewish Settlement Police", the "Special Police", "Auxiliary Police" and numerous transporation and plant protection forces, eventually numbering 22,000 in the early part of 1939. Clothed with Palestine Police uniforms and 'Kolpak' and 'bush' hats, the "notrut" became also a cultural movement which embodied the image of the "new" Hebrew man; the "notrut" movement eventually formed the core of the future Israeli Army.

Commemorative square white metal pin of the 1936 Levant Fair held in Palestine, 1936: detailed impressed image of the Fair's winged-horse icon, and the name of the event in English, Hebrew and Arabic, in the Bauhaus/International style artwork of the time. The back of the pin is a simple bent pin soldiered to the back; not maker-marked; weight: 0.65 grams.
The 1936 fair opened on 30th April against the backdrop of the 1936-39 Arab Revolt, and was the 7th in the series of these fairs held in Tel Aviv, which showcased agricultural and industrial produce of Palestine. 16 countries hosted pavilions in the 1936 fair and about 320,000 visitors attended (though fewer in number the previous fairs because of the security situation).

Zionist poster commemorating "Tel Hai Day" on the Jewish calendar date of 11th of Adar, in English, French, Spanish and Hebrew. Issued by the Jewish National Fund (JNF) in Jerusalem and designed by Z. Berter, 1961. Size: 23.5cm x 33.5cm. The poster is in overall good condition, with a few small surface creases in places and 3 tiny worm holes.
"Tel Hai Day" is an annual unofficial holiday commemorating the day Joseph Trumpeldor (pictured on the poster) fell (1 March 1920) defending the settlement of Tel Hai from Arab marauders. Trumpeldor earned fame in his time as the first and highest ranking Jewish officer (Captain) in the Czarist Army; distinguished himself in the Russo-Japanese War; helped found the Zion Mule Corps in 1915; and immigrated to Eretz-Israel/Palestine to further the Zionist enterprise.

Israel - patriotic silver cufflinks, 1950's. Neatly designed cufflinks with a touch of Zionism, in an oblong shape typical of the era's artistic design, each with smooth surfaces, incuse borders and a Star of David. One is stamped on the reverse "Made in Israel" with a small Star of David above it, and the initials "BOC" on the bottom end of the back, and on the other is stamped "Sterling 825" on the reverse. The fastening on the reverse of one cufflink stands up vertically, on the other it points diagonally but does not look bent or damaged. Nostalgic and lovely.

Israeli "Ma'ariv" newspaper wartime edition for Yom Kippur War: the 10 October 1973 "Sukkot" holiday edition, on the 4th day of the war with Egypt and Syria; 20 pages long including a separate holiday supplement. The opening headlines read: "Large Syrian 'pocket' in central Golan Heights destroyed"; "Heavy Katyusha rocket attack overnight on Kiryat Shmona"; "Iraqi force enters Syria"; "British intelligence confirms that the Russians are on their way to Israel". A brief comment by the paper's staff apologises for the shortness of the holiday edition due to many of its workers being drafted into the army and wishes its readers a happy holiday.
Other stories inside are split between the "northern front", "southern front", "home front", the "political front", and speak of the Syrian ground forces sustaining a heavy blow; a force of 15 Israeli soldiers holding out for 50 hours against Syrian tank and infantry forces; Egyptian television broadcasting scores of Israeli prisoners of war; 32 Israeli soldiers from an outpost on the Suez canal fighting encirclement for 60 hours and marching 8 hours in overrun territory back to an IDF base; an early article bringing up the issue that an Israeli pre-emptive strike (before the outbreak of the war) would have caused a deep rift between her and the United States - a long-standing sore fact that makes appraising the causes of the war painful to solve. The holiday supplement contains interesting war maps of the two battle fronts, of the first 3 days of the war. And also of note - the early use of the phrase "the Yom Kippur War" in the presentation of the war coverage, as the war did indeed become known by this name in Israel.
The significance of early War editions like this one lies partially in the fact that the Yom Kippur War was the last full scale war between Israel and her neighbors (in a sense the last major war in the middle east between more than two parties), and also in the fact that the surprise of the attack was so pivotal that the making of progress in the war - and of history - in the early days of the war were measured day by day by an accumulation of many big and small events. In this case, Israel's first counter-attack on the 8th of October failed, so that by the day of this edition - the 10th - the country was facing the real possibility of a catastrope. The sad irony is that the war was actually one of limited aims by the Egyptians and Syrians, but the Israeli leadership surprised by the attack, panicked and encouraged the Arab forces to continue further. The paper is in very good condition: not mint, with vertical and horizontal folds, but no tears and even suitable for framing.

Israeli "Ma'ariv" newspaper wartime edition for Yom Kippur War: the 15 October 1973 Monday edition, on the 9th day of the war; 12 pages long. Occuring the same day but not yet appearing in the day's papers was the Israeli ground operation which effectively turned the tide of the war in her favor until the end - Operation Valiant ("Abirey Lev" in Hebrew), Israel's counter-attack against the Egyptians in the Sinai and the crossing of the Suez canal; the operation in which Ariel Sharon gained fame. This edition opens with uncharacteristically open reports about Israel's casualties, 656 soldiers dead so far (it took the defense minister, Moshe Dayan, two days from the outbreak of the war - October 8th - to publicly admit the heavy losses the army was sustaining).
Other headlines read: "New York Times: Israel's air superiority diminished"; "25 Egyptian sea vessels sunk overnight in Israeli navy attack on Suez". Other stories from inside include an article on the death of IDF Gen. Albert Mandler, commander of the 252 Sinai Division, by Egyptian artillery fire (he was killed on the 13th); Israeli forces 30 kilometers away from Damascus; Egypt leaves 200 tanks and 1000 dead after 7 hour tank battle with Israel. More noteworthy in this edition are actually the emergency notices: a whole page devoted to hotlines for soldiers from various municipalities and areas of the country - from Netanya and Ashdod to Kibbutz Afikim and Arad; a "special concert" featuring Isaac Stern by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and the Israel Broadcasting Authority; another special concert by the Israeli Classical Ensemble featuring Pinchas Zuckerman; also an editorial cartoon by the cartoonist 'Dosh' (Kariel Gardosh). The paper is in very good condition, though with two tears on the upper left corner of the front page; vertical and horizontal folds.

Israel Air Force announcement: a double-sided paper flier (circa. 1957) proudly declaring the first "Air Force Demonstration" of a "Supersonic 'Boom' in the Skies of the Country" - "For the first time in Israel, before an audience a mighty supersonic explosion ("boom") will be demonstrated by four "Mystere" jets approaching the sound barrier". The flier further notes that (British) "Meteor" and (French) "Mystere" and "Ouragan" jets will demonstrate live canon strikes on targets, dogfights, and firing of rockets at speeds of over 1000 kilometers an hour before the audience. The announcement further promises "A 'Hora-Dance' [Israeli folk dance] in the Air by New Helicopters" and the appearance of the newest jets in the IAF, particularly the French "Vauture". Nostaligic and nice from when Israel was just 9-10 years old.

Eretz Israel memorabilia album: "Mishmar Ve'Sport" ('Defense and Sport'), a handsomely designed hardbound album produced by the 'Dubek' cigarette company for the purpose of assembling collectible picture cards which came in packages of their cigarettes; circa. 1939. Children at that time would collect and trade these cards, and this album was provided free as a location in which to store and display the pictures. The album is 66 pages long and contains all 289 cards; in excellent, preserved condition.
"Defense and Sport - seriousness and games" - as the preface points out, "are seemingly opposing entities, though each one characterizes skills which are the most exalted and raised by man and nation: heroism and freedom, strength and redemption, courage and honor".
The album is arranged in the following subjects:
- "Defense", which includes chapters on 'defenders of the homeland', 'training of the notrim [Jewish settlement police]', 'defense and labor', 'towers and fortification', '"On Guard"', 'the mobile guard ["noded"]', 'attack and defense', 'keepers of order and transportation', 'the [boy and girl] scouts';
- "Light Athletics", which includes chapters on 'running', 'running and jumping', 'pole vaults and shot puts', 'javelin and discus', 'aerobics'; "Heavy Athletics", including chapters on 'boxing', 'wrestling', 'weight lifting';
- "Sports", which includes chapters on 'football', 'hand-ball', 'hockey', 'basketball and volleyball', 'tennis and ping-pong', 'fencing and horse-riding', 'water sports', and 'sports associations';
- "Conquest of the Land", which includes chapters on 'conquest of the terrain', 'towards the sea' and 'conquest of the air'.
Each section and several of the chapters includes writeups on the relevant subjects, and in the sports sections in particular, many statistics on records and achievements.
Adorned with water-colored inside cover pictures of a "tower and stockade" kibbutz and the Dubek factory, the album pages are neatly laid out, with modern fonts and design styles of the time; each card frame has a description, and each section contains elaborations on what each card depicts. For collectors, the photos reveal a variety of details, emblems and insignia; for enthusiasts there are many facts and details about sports personalities and norms of the time. Interesting corners of specialty are the sections on 'conquest of the terrain', in which the stage-by-stage erection of "tower and stockade" kibbutzim is depicted, and the section 'conquest of the air' illustrates rarely seen images of aviation and aviators in Eretz Israel.
Overall the album is lovlingly presented, in good taste and stout pride by the makers, who in closing write that the purpose of the album is to capture images of the national revival movement, whose purpose is to "create a new Jewish character, a man who is healthy, good-looking, sure of himself and stands with his own two feet on the ground, connected to nature and with his familiarity of his physical prowess he overcomes the realities of life and and joins as a piece, through discipline, the whole of the nation in its coming into being". A wonderful testament of old Eretz Israel, simpler times, and unvarnished aspirations.

The album is 56 pages long and contains all 144 cards; with cardboard design details on the cover and stylized designs on the inside covers; in excellent, preserved condition.

The album is divided into four sections: one on the "Habima" theater company; another on the "Ohel" theater troupe; a section on the "Ha'Matateh" comedy troupe; and one on "The art of Dancing".

Israeli austerity period food program price list, March 1955. The Israeli period of austerity ('Tzena') took place between 1949 and 1959. To cope with shortages of food and raw materials as a result of the War of Independence, the absorption of a million new immigrants, the need to stabilize the local currency and economic sanctions by neighboring Arab states, Israel instituted an austerity program in April 1949 based on coupons and points, which allocated pre-determined rationed amounts of foodstuffs and later, other materials to its citizens.
The program was originally led by Canadian-born lawyer Bernard (Dov) Yosef - former civilian commander of wartime Jerusalem - and the then "Minister of Austerity" and the allocation of foodstuffs was determined by an American expert. The newspapers would announce the time and area of food distribution, along with the price and necessary coupon booklet vouchers for the acquisition. The program later grew to encompass clothing, furniture and even housing, serving as a method of establishing a national "bottom line" standard of living and Israeli-styled tone to daily social standards.
This pricelist was issued by the 'Food Division' of the Ministry of Trade and Industry for the period March-April 1955. It lists the prices in the old Protot and Agurot currency of the day, for such items as sugar, jam, rice, coffee, tee, fats and eggs - all measured by increments of grams. The list shows prices for "meat" and "fillet fish". There is a special box for "Additional Servings" for pregnant women and 'workers doing hard physical work, and another box listing foodstuffs for which no vouchers are necessary - imported cheese, white flour, cocoa powder, filled chocolate, and others. One box also lists which voucher codes are needed for each type of foodstuff, and other small box reminds the reader to tune in to the Voice of Israel radio every morning at 7:10 for announcements by the Ministry, and also on certain days at 12:30 for a program sponsored by the Ministry, called the "Household Corner". For those familiar with Israeli-styled customer service (or lack thereof), there is even a box regarding complaints by the public and to whom to 'go' (i.e. not to write to) regarding those issues.
A remarkable sobering but nostalgic document of a country that has since become a hub for high-tech. Framed and lovely, with some wear-tears at the top and some discoloration stains.

Metal box for mint candy's, produced by the Elite (chocolates) company of Ramat Gan, circa. late 1950's-1960's. The box has a pop-off lid, is colored gray and bears a stylized design in red. Has light rust speckles, but the tin's shape is undamaged. UNIQUE Original Eretz Israel memorabilia - a beautiful and rare booklet - "Flowers of the Holy Land" - of 8 hand-drawn and color-painted 'postcards' depicting key attractions of the developing community in Palestine, plus a cover page.
The cards are color prints of hand-made depictions, and though undated, based on the sites highlighted within (the Great Synagogue of Tel Aviv - founded 1918; the Hebrew University - opened 1925), it is possible to date this production to around 1925-27. The eight prints include scenes of the Mosque of Omar (Dome of the Rock) in Jerusalem; the Hebrew University in Jerusalem; a landscape scene of Bethlehem; the Great Mosque of Hebron; a sparse-looking Allenby Street in Tel Aviv (with the Great Synagogue in the foreground); a view from Mount Carmel of Haifa and Haifa Bay; and a view of Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee. The booklet is written in Hebrew, English and French (in that order), with these languages and German also appearing as subtitles on the bottom of each card. Cards depicting Jewish or Zionist themes have the Hebrew message on them: "For a Good (New) Year, Write and Sign". The cards are separated by a thin sheet of protective paper, and on the back of some cards is written (in the 3 main languages), "Flowers from the Holy Land".
The booklet is hard-bound by cardboard with protected edges and a brown bound back with the title in English. One of the cards (Haifa Bay) is loose, but to protect the physical integrity of the booklet, I have not scanned the other plates here. An exquisite and unique sample of early Eretz Israel memorabilia and touristic mementos.

Postcards of Israel's first President (Chaim Weitzmann) and Prime Minister (David Ben-Gurion), late 1940's - early 1950's. Four undated postcards, two of each leader, from the Moshe Chalutz press. They bear the rough, rudimentary black and white appearance of the country's first postcards but are undated. Judging by slight variations in the fonts, it appears that the cards were published at different times (different editions) albeit during the same period. On he reverse of one of the cards of Ben-Gurion someone has subsequently added the date of his passing and his age at the time. Also included in this lot are two postcards of Theodore Herzl - one brown and white and another in color, all undated. All cards are in good, preserved condition except for a few nicks on the corner of one Ben-Gurion card and the colored Herzl card, somewhat frayed on the edges and back.

Poster - silk screen print on board, advertising the Israeli shipping line "Zim" and exhorting: "Have a Good Time - Go With Zim" (it rhymes in Hebrew). At bottom is listed the different steam ships operated by Zim: 'Zion', 'Israel', 'Theodore Herzl', 'Jerusalem', 'Moledet'. Circa early 1960's. Zim began operations before the establishment of the State of Israel, and between 1945-49 provided critical logistical support, supplying the state with materials during the War of Independence and in transporting refugees to the State.
The S.S. "Jerusalem" was 40 years old when acquired in 1953; she was formerly the S.S. "Bergensfjord", built in 1913, maintaining regular transit between Norway and New York, especially during the First World War. In 1940, she left Norway two days before the German invasion and came into the service of the British Ministry of War Transport. After the war she was taken over by Home Lines and renamed S.S. "Argentina", after which she was acquired by Zim. In 1955, with the acquisition of a new ship, she was renamed the "Aliya". The S.S. "Zion" and "Israel" were both built in 1953 under the Reparation Payments Agreement. In the same framework, the Herzl was launched in 1957. "Moledet" joined the Zim fleet in 1961, from France, as a former luxury liner. Photographed here in protective plastic. Excellent condition.
