The following 25 Mils pieces represent key historical numismatica from the establishment of the State of Israel. Part of a scarce issue of coins, the following pieces are examples of the only coins to bear the historical date of the State's foundation - 1948. The 1948 issue represents just 42,500 units minted of a total issue of roughly 700,000 that was produced between 1948-49. Coins of these two years were minted during the course of the War of Independence from scarce aluminum (confiscated, in this case, from a reluctant supplier in order to produce these coins). This issue was commissioned and designed during the summer of 1948 and produced in Holon from a coining press which had been converted from an American steel press. The coins were punched from hand-fed sheets of metal, and under these make-shift conditions production was slow. One source estimates that only about six weeks were spent producing the 1948 coinage. Regardless of their simple aluminum base, these beautifully designed coins were produced under difficult circumstances in every sense and represent powerful symbols of the country's rebirth.
There are a variety of types of coins from this series and we will endeavor to carry them all for you.

Israel - 25 Mils, 1948 in aluminum, UNC. The only Israeli coin to bear the date of the country's establishment. The 42,500 pieces struck with this date were apparently minted in less than 6 weeks, during the War of Independence, in a garage. Sharp strike with crisp detail, lovely shine and luster, few badgmarks. Rare in this condition.

Israel - 25 Mils, 1948 uniface coin, in aluminum, UNC. Part of the nation's scarce first series of coins but in uniface, with 3 raised dots on the blank reverse side (indicating an authentic piece). Bears sharp detail with a nice dull polished surface which is a little darker and more mature-looking than the regular 1948 issue. The piece is reported to have been either a test pattern or part of the original 1948 series which was struck while the obverse die was accidentally not in place, after it had been removed for security reasons. Judging by the difference in planchet finish and sharpness of strike, it is possible that the uniface issue is actually a pattern.

Israel - 25 Mils, 1949 half link (error) coin, in aluminum, UNC. Minted on shiny toned aluminum similar to the closed-link 1949 issue, with similar 'munched' sections of the border-beads on obv. The 'half-link' was probably caused by the decaying of the makeshift dies used in the mintage of the 25 Mils series. This is an extremely nice piece with smooth surfaces and a wonderful shine.

Designed by Ya'akov Enyedi and minted in Tel Aviv, this medal commemorates the 75th anniversary of Bank Leumi Le-Israel ("National Bank of Israel"), formerly known as the Anglo-Palestine Bank. The piece is packaged in the box of the Israel Government Coins & Medals Corporation, though since it was presented to an employee of the bank at this time, it also comes with a printed greeting from the Chairman of the Bank's board, A. Yefet, in which he writes that the medal's quotation, "faithful to your house and country", is an expression of the bank's tradition of accomplishments which he hopes the bank will continue to honor. Israeli error coin: Half Shekel dated 1996-1997 (äúùð''æ) whose first letter "Hey" in the Hebrew date has become the letter "Khet" instead (making the date look like çúùð''æ ), probably due to a filled die. The presence of a slight serif which extends beyond the left verticle line of this "Khet" indicates that the letter should really be a "Hey", as the letter "Khet" does not have such a serif. Weighs 6.55g (which is in the correct range of 6.35 - 6.55g for genuine Half Shekel pieces). In EF, and highly unusual. Photos of a regular issued Half Shekel coin are shown below for comparison.

Israeli forged(?) 1 Shekel coin dated 2000-2001 (äúùñ''à) with very thin, crooked lettering and poor detail; in VF-EF condition. Presented as a forgery, as I doubt this is any kind of pattern - though I've never seen something like this. Usually, forged Israeli pieces are die cast but otherwise pressed identically to a real piece. This one looks like someone handmade all the details from scratch - and poorly so. This piece weighs 4.10g, which is ironically similar to the Chanukka issue 1 Shekel coins (which all seem to weigh perfectly 4.00g); regular issue genuine 1 Shekel coins however weigh anywhere between 3.40 - 3.50g. Photos of a genuine piece are shown below for comparison.
